mixing
my buddy mixes my music for free! why should i pay you to do it?
i’ve mixed hundreds of songs over the years, and the truth about mixing is that no two songs are the same. there’s no plugin preset, template, or standard vocal chain that can be slapped on to make it perfect. every song deserves its own unique approach, proper care, and attention. a discerning ear can help bring out a little more soul! if you’re curious about how your songs could sound mixed by me, check out my portfolio to see if you think we’d be a good fit sonically!
but i record myself and like how it sounds, what’s the point of mixing?
every popular song you’ve heard on radio or streaming was mixed. this doesn’t mean every artist used an A-list mixing engineer who charges $10,000 per song, but it does mean that if you want to be taken more seriously, mixing is worth the investment. this might mean investing your time by taking on the mixing role, or by investing in an experienced mixing engineer to help elevate your music!
questions?
what format do you deliver mixed files in?
unless you specify another format you’d prefer, all mixes will be delivered as 24-bit, 48kHz WAV files.
how long do you store files after mixing is complete?
i try to keep files as long as possible, but a reasonable expectation is that your files will remain safely with me for up to a year after delivery.
how should i upload my files for mixing?
please export your stems as 24-bit, 48kHz WAV files.
for vocals, i ask that you take off all processing. however, if there’s an effect you can’t live without, then i just ask for you to send me a version with and without the effect so that i can have options!
for beat stems, i ask that you keep all processing on. i want the beat to sound exactly the same as the producer intended when they created it.
what’s the difference between mixing and mastering?
i like to use the analogy of baking a cake to describe these processes!
mixing is the process of combining all your individual elements like flour, sugar, eggs, etc…(808, vocals, synths, etc…) and baking them into a delicious cake (your final mix).
mastering is where we add our final details to that perfectly baked cake (your final mix) as a whole. we’re no longer dealing with individual ingredients, but we’re making sure the icing is beautiful (overall EQ and saturation), adding decorations (creating smooth transitions), and getting it ready to eat (pushing the volume to a competitive level).
do you charge for mix revisions?
revisions are included in the price of the mix. i take my projects to the finish line. whether that’s nailing it on mix version 1, or taking it to mix version 10, i want to make sure you’re 100% satisfied.
how long does mixing take? can i pay a rush fee?
mixing turnaround is typically around 72 hours. i tend to not offer rush fees for mixing, because it’s a time consuming process that i try not to rush if at all possible. BUT if it’s crunch-time and you need your record out asap, hit me up and we can figure something out.
what gear do you use?
i couldn’t say it any better myself, so i’m borrowing the words from a mentor and world-class mastering engineer, Chris Graham:
“i don’t post a gear list, and here’s why: i strive to operate my business with the highest level of integrity, and getting into a ‘gear-list war’…isn’t a battle worth fighting. if you’d like to hear what i can do for your music, please send me a song for a free mastering sample.”
how do i credit you?
i GREATLY appreciate artists who take the time to add proper credits when uploading their songs! If you’d like to credit me as the mastering engineer for your project, simply credit me as ‘Jimmy DeRosa’ and that’s all there is to it.
do mixing engineers own the songs after they mix them?
nope! YOU are the owner of your music.
like free stuff?
